Big shout out to Volume for giving Star One our first ever interview! Have posted the interview below but check out the article in it's full glory
HERE.
:)
How did Star One begin?
Well we're brothers and had both always been involved in DJing and making music. We started Star One as a side project at the start of this year to try a different musical angle and didn't plan to take it that seriously. When the remixes started getting airplay on Radio 1 with hundreds of thousands of YouTube Hits we knew we were onto something and we made time to get in the studio!
Describe your sound.
Always a hard one and I hate genre labels - I'd say it's Hip Hop and UK funky influenced bass driven, grimey garage house music!! You can call it whatever you wanna call it, we just hope you think it's good!
How do you create?
We have our own studio with a basic setup. We generally start with a cool melody or a fresh sound that we've found and then build the beat around that. We add in a few breaks, cuts and drops and take it from there! Yet often we aren't in the studio together so alot of ideas are shared back and forth via emails and alterations made over Skype.
How does your music relate to its audience?
We like to believe people relate to our music because it's good! But the UK Garage sound seems to have really come back into fashion (it's funny how things work!). Our style is very UK Garage influenced but I think we are also adding something new and making it fresh which people like - New Age Garage with a vintage feel!
Who/what inspires you?
I think the UK Underground scene is very inspirational in itself. There are so many new different sounds emerging all the time, it's hard to keep up! There are many talented producers breaking the boundaries between Grime, Dubstep, UK Funky, Garage and House. It results in really fresh sounding music. We just try to take it all in and come out with our own sound.
Favourite producers?
Our favourite producers include DJ Premier, Timbaland, Kanye West, Ryan Leslie and Just Blaze. Also UK legends like MJ Cole and Zed Bias.
What's next?
So far people mainly know us for doing remixes. We're now planning to start bringing out some of the original material that we've been working on with the Star One EP due for release 26 September. We're lucky enough to have worked with some really talented people including Toddla T and Manchester rapper Faro and are excited for people to hear our own work. We've also recently been doing alot of remix work for Ministry of Sound, Island Records and Polydor Records so we're looking forward to the release of those records too.
Anyone you would like to plug?
We've been working with a really talented singer called Sarah Lillie. She sings acoustic folk type music but also loves her bass music! She's featured twice on our debut EP and we're looking to do a full release of tunes that we're currently recording with her. She's definitely going to be big! Also big shouts to Toddla T and Manchester rapper Faro who are also featured on the EP.
What are you listening to at the moment? A load of stuff. We're always listening to new music for our radio show The Star One UK Showcase (Every Friday 12-2am on DeJaVuFM). Producer-wise Swindle, Chimpo, Dom HZ, Royal T and Rudimental are all coming out with really exciting stuff at the moment. Also we're really feeling Scrufizzer out of the Grime scene, he's got a crazy flow and singing voice as well! The SBTRKT and Jay-Z and Kanye albums have been on repeat all summer as well.
